Where should the unit be placed?

Most people find it convenient to place it along the wall or on a countertop. Unlike some air cleaners, it's not necessary to place it high in the room because the cleaned air, ions and ozone are discharged out of the top of the unit to be dispersed throughout the room. Some ionizers can't be placed near a wall, because the ions charge the wall, causing dust to cling to the surface - the so-called 'black wall effect.' There is no black wall effect with the XJ-3000C, so you can place it near a wall without worry.

Areas appropriate for an XJ-3000C include

How quiet is the XJ-3000C?

It's whisper-quiet. At the low speed it's quieter than the fan in a personal computer. At medium speed it's about as quiet as that PC fan.

At high it's a little louder, but in all the modes the sound won't be noticeable if there's any activity going on in the room or if you're more than a couple of feet from the unit.

By the way, unlike the so-called 'silent' ionic air purifiers, the New-Aire won't make progressively louder hissing noises as the collection plates get dirtier. Of course, the New-Aire is much quieter than the units that only feature a HEPA filter and the so-called 'whole house' units.

Is the XJ-3000C hard to set up and operate?

No, it's simple. You unpack the unit, remove seal on filter cartridge, place the cartridge, plug it in and you're ready to clean the air.

The unit ships with a full-color illustrated quick-start guide and manual for setting up and operating the unit.

Pick the desired settings. For most users it's set it and forget it.

Do you make a larger unit?

No, but for a very good reason. Actually for several good reasons:

  1. The reason you might think you'd want a larger air purifier is to cover more space with a single unit. However, you'd need a much larger (and much LOUDER) fan in the unit to cover more space.
  2. The further you get from an air purifier the less effective it is going to be, no matter how big it is. (Imagine trying to light all the rooms in your house with a single light bulb.) Better to use two XJ-3000C units to cover 1000 sq. ft. than one larger, louder unit.
  3. Ionization #1: Some particles are too small to be trapped by the filters. Negatively ionized air molecules will cause small particles to clump together and become large enough to be trapped in the filters the next time they are pulled into the air purifier. However, the further the newly clumped particles are from the air purifier, the less likely it becomes that they will wind up being pulled into the filters at all. They'll just stay in the environment. Yet another reason it makes more sense to place a few smaller air purifiers around the home or office instead of using one larger one.
  4. Ionization #2: Negative ions also kill certain viruses and bacteria, and even neutralize some chemicals. Unfortunately ionized air molecules lose their electrical charge relatively quickly. The further you send these ions the less likely it is that they will hold their charge, and that's assuming they don't collide with a particle or a wall along the way.
Here's what you need to know: the further away you get from the ionizer, the lower the concentration of ions, greatly diminishing the value of having an ionizer in the first place. An ionizer that covers a smaller area is flat-out more effective.
  5. When doors in your house are closed the effectiveness of the so-called 'whole house' air cleaners is extremely limited. If you place XJ-3000C units throughout the house closed doors won't circumvent their usefulness.
  6. Ozone: So-called 'whole-house' units produce quite a bit of ozone to cover a large area - unfortunately this means that really high levels of ozone build up in the space just around the unit, especially if the doors have been closed nearby. Instead of getting the pleasant 'mountain air' scent you get with light ozone, concentrated ozone can smell like chlorine bleach - and go beyond the recommended levels. People won't feel comfortable in that area while the ozone levels are so high, so they turn the unit off, thus defeating the whole purpose of having an air purifier. (Most purifiers don't allow you to switch off just the ozone - you have to switch the unit off entirely. The XJ-3000C lets you control the amount of ozone in your environment, or turn it off completely, while still giving you the benefit of the other air purifying technologies.)
  7. In the end, it's far more effective to space out a few XJ-3000C units than to use a single large air purifier. It's also more cost-effective, especially with New-Aire's quantity pricing.

Do I really need all six technologies?

Absolutely. Combining all these technologies in a single, small package is a real innovation.

Each of the technologies does things the others don't do. In fact, if your air purifier doesn't do everything XJ-3000C does, it won't do as good a job of cleaning your air.

The six technologies are:

  1. Anti-bacterial pre-filter
  2. Activated Carbon Filter
  3. HEPA Filter
  4. Germicidal Ultra-violet light
  5. Ozone (you can switch ozone off and on, as needed)
  6. Negative Ions

Think of these technologies like a team, working together to clean your air. Examples:

Some air purifiers don't use filters. The companies that sell those purifiers even make it seem like not using a filter is a plus. Why does your purifier use filters?

Filters, especially when layered like our pre-filter - activated carbon filter - HEPA filter system, are simply the most efficient and effective way to collect particulates from the air.

Our filter system is MUCH easier to maintain:
Some air purifiers just use an electrostatic collection plate to collect particulate matter. These plates rapidly drop off in efficiency and must be cleaned often. (They also become noisy as the particles collect on the plate. The manual for the popular Sharper Image™ Ionic Breeze® Quadra® air purifier tells you that their purifier requires cleaning about every two weeks. Cleaning can be laborious and the unit needs to be offline (unplugged and partially disassembled) overnight. That's 26 times a year.

By contrast, our New-Aire XJ-3000C cleans the air by forcing it through the three-stage filter system. (The three stages are a pre-filter, activated carbon and HEPA filter.) The cartridge that contains the filter system needs to be changed about every year or two in most environments. You can even extend the life of the filter cartridge by opening the front of the unit and vacuuming the pre-filter for a few seconds every few months.

26 times a year (plus 26 nights of down-time) for non-filter systems vs. a few seconds every few months and a filter cartridge change about once a year for our system. There simply IS no maintenance advantage to filterless systems.

"Whole-home Units"
The so-called "whole home units" seem like a good idea; if it were only so, and it could be - if you lived in a barn. Imagine trying to light all the rooms in your house with a single light bulb. The light from the bulb doesn't travel through walls and doors, and neither do the ions from air purifiers.

Ionizers work by sending ions out into the environment. The ions cause smaller particles to clump together, making them heavy enough to fall to the ground, where they'll just get kicked up into the air again. Since your home is probably vacuumed regularly, you'd hope that vacuuming will take care of those particles - and to an extent they do. But vacuum cleaners kick up a lot of dust, and a lot of particles flow right out of the vacuum cleaner.

Bottom line: hoping that ions and a vacuum cleaner are all you need to clean your air doesn't make a lot of sense. Better to us an air purifier that continually pulls in clumped particles, holds them in its filters, and disinfects them with Ultra- violet light.

Buyer Beware:
It's getting harder to market filterless air purifiers - the world is finding out that they really don't do a very good job - if they do a job at all.

To improve their effectiveness, some 'filterless' air purifiers now actually do have lint filters and charcoal screens. They have to be cleaned often and they aren't anywhere near as effective as a real air filter system, like the one you get with the New-Aire XJ-3000C.

Why is it important for the ozone feature to have its own on/off switch?

Ozone is extremely useful for sanitizing the air and destroying some odors, but you may not need to run the ozone generator all day long - many ozone generating air-purifiers make you turn off the entire unit if you want to turn off ozone. That's why we've given the ozone generator in the XJ-3000C a separate switch (with three 'on' settings). You'll want to keep the other technologies in the XJ-3000C working all the time.

Some 'whole-house' air purifiers produce large amounts ozone in order to cover more area. Unfortunately they end up building up high levels of ozone near the unit, especially if the doors have been closed nearby. Instead of getting the pleasant 'mountain air' scent you get with light ozone, concentrated ozone can smell like chlorine bleach - and go beyond the recommended levels. Most of these units do not allow you to just shut off the ozone.

At New-Aire we believe in letting you control the amount of ozone in your air - without having to lose the other air purifying benefits of the XJ-3000C.

Why do you include a 'timer' feature in your air purifier?

The fact is, you'll probably want to run the XJ-3000C all the time. However, you might wish to run it with the ozone feature on 'high' while nobody's at home. The ozone sanitizes the air, but some people don't like the smell of the ozone when it is being produced at high levels.

With the timer feature you can set the unit to run with the ozone on high for 1, 2 or 4 hours, after which the unit shuts itself down. Ozone breaks down into normal, odorless oxygen in about 30 minutes. When you get home you'll have the benefit of sanitized air without any smell of ozone. While at home you can simply turn the XJ-3000C on again with the ozone set to medium or low, or off completely.
