Here's What You Need To Know About The New-Aire Air Purifier

1. It's highly effective at removing small particles and gases from the air in your house. (See the independent test results.) Not all air purifiers on the market are turning out to be that effective.
2. Driven by a whisper-quiet fan, our purifier uses six methods working in concert to clean your air. This is a big innovation: it increases the effectiveness of the system. Most purifiers only use a subset of these methods, making them incomplete solutions.
3. It's very easy and inexpensive to maintain.
   • You need to change the filter cartridge every 1-2 years, and you need to replace the UV bulb every 12-15 months.

The Oreck manual is available on their website. Maintenance includes:

• Changing the filters (the useful life of the filters is unspecified)
• Cleaning the ionizer cell. This must be done every 4-8 weeks.
• A special cleaning fluid must be used. The manual says you must "thoroughly saturate the cell and prefilter. Be sure to spray between each cell plates and cover every surface. Allow product to soak for a few minutes, not allowing it to dry. Rinse thoroughly with water. For extremely heavy deposits, repeat the process."

Maintenance Notes:

You can download the Friedreich owners manual on their website. The maintenance regimen they describe in the owners' manual includes:

• Cleaning the pre-filter with a brush or a vacuum cleaner, though if that doesn't do the job, then cleaning it with an all-purpose alkaline detergent (and a subsequent thorough rinsing). The manual doesn't specify how often this needs to be done. The New-Aire pre-filter will benefit by cleaning it with a vacuum cleaner every month or two. Nothing more.
• The carbon filter in the Friedrich needs cleaning. The New-Aire's does not.
• The Friedrich contains what they call an 'electronic cell.' Two thirds of a page in the manual is devoted to the intricate job of cleaning this cell, which must be done with care, to prevent damage to the ionizer wires and the collection plates. You'll also need to use hot water that is between 150°F and 170°F and detergent. They also say you'll occasionally need to clean the ionizing wires. The do not say how often you will have to do this.
• Further, you'll have to use an ammonia based or butyl based detergent to clean tobacco tar and other smoke residue from the collector plates.
• When replacing the collector plates in the Friedrich, you'll have to make sure that they are not touching, because that will cause electrical arcing.
• Finally, you'll have to check for broken ionizer wires and a bent collection plate. You'll have to replace those items if they are broken or bent.
• By comparison, the New-Aire, which also uses an ionizer, requires no such maintenance. The sum total of maintenance required is to change out the filter cartridge every 1-2 years, change out the UV bulb every 12-15 months, and a moment of vacuuming on the pre-filter every month or two. None of these tasks should take more than a minute or two, tops.
