The HEPA filter is the third stage of the 3-stage filter cartridge. It's job is to capture the smallest solid pollantants that are often associated with health problems.
HEPA is an acronym that stands for High Efficiency Particle Arresting.
The HEPA filter removes 99.97% of particles (down to .3 microns in size) that pass through the filter. Once in the filter they don’t recirculate into the air. The HEPA filter is considered the most effective type of air filter for solid particles, such as allergens and the dangerous tiny particles found in smog.
It captures a high volume of floating dust and other particles. It captures the clumped ionized particles that would otherwise just settle to the ground if a typical ionizer were used. (Most ionizers don’t come with a HEPA filter.)
